Ah! Like she said, he only worries about humans, not animals, so maybe the rules do not apply to animals.

Maybe he actually lead it to afterlife. Maybe it was the spirit of the bird that flew away
Or maybe the bird wasn’t even dead just knocked out. so death healed it
Or Death created an animal version of himself, to greet the animals on the other side.
